London 2014 [Unbuilt] The concept is to create a house which stages a discovery and engagement with the larger environment. The site is located in a predominantly residential area, contains two-storey detached Victorian houses. The site falls just outside two nearby conservation areas. The areas have a mainly Victorian and Edwardian character. A variety of construction materials, stock and red bricks laid in Flemish bond, stucco trimming, low pitch or high pitch roofs covered with slates or tiles make the predominant materials and finish within the Conservation Areas. The existing buildings, whilst in need of refurbishment, contribute positively to the setting of the nearby Conservation Area and the general street scene. The buildings along this short stretch of avenue constitute an important uniform elevational run of properties which make an important contribution to the street scene. The building are retained and extended to provide a residential conversion scheme to preserve the character of the area. Original fabric is restored to enhance the significance of assets. There is scope for a more modern approach on the rear elevation to create an intimate geometric and functional relationship between interior rooms and exterior garden space. |
