Tokyo 2001-7 Hopkins Architects The brief was to build upon an existing, nine-storey 1952 building in a truly modern style, whilst addressing the historical setting. We have created an additional 35 floors above ground and four below, providing 195,000 sq m of retail, public and office space. The concept is for a two articulated slender tower formation consisting of one lower, which relates in height to the neighbouring building with a main upper tower extending the maximum permissible limit of 200m. An expressed podium of +31m was a planning control requirement. Shin-Marunouchi Building is the first example in Japan of green power, 100 percent renewable energy. Since April 2010, all of its electricity is generated from wind, water and biomass. |
